History Of Rupsha

Historical background and administrative history

A) Ethnic identity:

The southern part of Bengal is known as the Gangetic sub-island. Multiple rivers have turned the whole landmass into numerous islands and peninsulas. Due to various natural ups and downs and tides, rivers have broken, chars have fallen, land has been flooded, new land has been awakened. At that time the name of this southern island region was Chandra Deep. The archipelago was again divided into several subdivisions. To the east of Chandradwip, most of the area of Bagerhat extended to Rangdwip (Rangdia) and Madhudip (Madhudia). The present Rupsha Upazila was connected to this sub-island. The whole region was part of the Sundarbans.

B) Origin of Khulna and place of Rupsa:

From ancient times the people of this region used to collect timber from the Sundarbans. All the wood needed in this area came from the Sundarbans. In addition to the Bawali group, which collects timber, a small group was involved in extracting honey and wax. There were a lot of fish in the canals of the rivers of the Sundarbans. However, the idea of catching fish on a commercial basis from here was not in the past. However, whoever went to the Sundarbans, they would take place in a place called Nayabad, the last boundary of the town. It was a new plantation to cut down forests and build settlements. Where the Bhairab River turns east, leaving Sen's Bazaar to the north, that was the place. Here a fleet of boats was waiting to enter the Sundarbans. If anyone wanted to open the boat at night, the "forest goddess" would say, don't open it. Many people think that the name Khulna originates from here. However, there is another acceptable legend about the beginning of the name Khulna. That is, in the past a merchant named Dhanpati lived in this area. His two wives are 1) Lahna and 2) Khullana. Lahana was childish but jealous. Who would bother Khullana when the rich man went into trade? On the other hand, the beautiful Khullana was barren. There was no limit to his vision for this. Of course, Dhanpati loved Khullana very much. Khulneshwari built a temple in his name on the banks of Bhairab. About two and a half hundred years ago, this temple disappeared into the riverbed (now Atharbeki). Since then the name of that village is Khulna. Later Kismat Khulna. It is seen that two legends about the origin of the name Khulna are prevalent in the present Rupsha Upazila.

 C) Origin of the name Rupsha:

The history of Rupsha Upazila i.e. Khulna is closely connected with Bhairab river. In fact, Khulna's journey as a business center is centered on Bhairab. The Bhairab is the longest river in the south. At one time this river was a terrible idol. Avon no longer has that ordeal. The origin of Bhairab is in this Rupsha. The beginning of Bhairab is from the opposite side of where the Srutakirti river falls into the Padma through Malda. After coming some distance and merging with Jalangi river, it was liberated again and came to Khulna through Meherpur, Darshana, Kotchandpur and Jessore. Sen has left the market and turned around. Meanwhile, the Pashur River in the south extends to the beel in the east of Khulna. To the west a canal mentioned from Beel Pabla joins the Mayur River (Maiyarganga) to the south.
